10 Top Tips to Save Money on Your AC System

energy savings

An HVAC system is not just something you can have installed and then forget about it. It is something that requires regular maintenance, not only to keep it functioning at optimal levels but also to prevent system malfunctions and costly breakdowns.

Upgrading your air conditioner, as well as properly maintaining it, can mean significant savings on your electricity bills.

There are also incentive programs to consider if you are considering a complete HVAC overhaul. We have proudly developed our Quality Installation program to ensure your new air conditioner is the correct size for your home and it is professionally installed according to Energy Star guidelines, to save you money and energy. In addition, you will qualify for a rebate up to $750.

Whether you are considering a new air conditioning system or you just want to learn a few tricks to keep those electricity bills down, the following tips might prove to be helpful:

  1. Seal the AC ducts: A qualified contractor can test and seal your heating and cooling ducts, something that can yield savings of up to $300 a year on your heating and cooling costs. Sealants called mastics, metal and plastic bands, and sheet metal screws are used to seal the ducts effectively, rather than regular duct tape.
  2. Turn the thermostat up: When you’re not going to be at home, consider raising the thermostat between 10 and 15 degrees, as this can save you up to 15% of your energy bills.
  3. Install a programmable thermostat: One of these allows you to choose the best times to cool your house. Set it at a minimum of 78 degrees when in use, because for every degree cooler you have it, your energy usage goes up by 8%.
  4. Weatherproof and insulate: Weatherproofing and insulating your system properly means you can set the thermostat a bit higher and feel just as comfortable and cool.
  5. Improve reflection and shading: Cover your windows and keep blinds closed during the heat of the day and consider planting leafy trees around the outside of your house to increase shade naturally.
  6. Keep on top of filter changes: Clean the permanent filters or change the disposable ones on your air conditioner every month, setting an alarm on your phone or noting it on a calendar to remind you.
  7. Keep the compressor clean and cool: The compressor is the HVAC part that transfers heat outside, so it’s best to locate it somewhere cool and shaded. Also, ensure debris and weeds are regularly cleared away from the unit and keep the coils on the back clean.
  8. Install the room AC in the shade: A room air conditioner functions best when kept away from direct sunlight, so install units on north-facing walls of your house or, if you only have west and south-facing sides, use passive cooling measures such as shady trees to protect the unit from direct sunlight.
  9. Avoid peak hours: Cycle or switch off your central AC during peak daytime hours if possible, as this is when electricity costs the most.
  10. Get an annual inspection: It is recommended that you invest in a licensed HVAC professional to conduct a thorough inspection of your AC system and full cleaning once a year.

An AC system is designed to keep your home cool and comfortable, but those bills can sometimes be way more than you anticipated. If you apply the above tips, you should be able to enjoy substantial savings on your energy bills from now on.
